American Elsewhere

American Elsewhere by Robert Jackson Bennett. This was one of those books that spends a lot of time building up to revelations that have already been revealed by the build-up. The author is pretty cruel to the characters, especially in the climax — lots of apparently pointless gory demonstrations. I really liked the opening third, which nailed a feeling of creepy weirdness, but as the book goes on, the characters and narrative spend more and more time explicitly ruminating on this weirdness, which starts to ruin the effect. Overall, a fun read.
