Opinion | We Were Badly Misled About Covid - The New York Times by Zeynep Tufekci. Most credible organizations now rate a leak from the Wuhan lab as the most likely origin of COVID-19.
I am confused. Tufekci points to a 2020 paper in Nature Medicine* that says (emphasis mine):
However, since we observed all notable SARS-CoV-2 features, including the optimized RBD and polybasic cleavage site, in related coronaviruses in nature, we do not believe that any type of laboratory-based scenario is plausible.
And goes on to explain that this was essentially a lie; these authors in fact believed the lab origin scenario was the most likely. There were five authors: Kristian G. Andersen, Andrew Rambaut, W. Ian Lipkin, Edward C. Holmes & Robert F. Garry. Now Tufekci points to a recent NY Times guest essay in a context indicating the essay provides good guidance on how to handle dangerous lab research: Opinion | Recent Virus Research Should Raise Alarm - The New York Times, by, wait for it, W. Ian Lipkin and Ralph Baric.
So … Dr Lipkin was untrustworthy in 2020, and now is a trustworthy authority on matters of lab safety?
